Feature Destination on Foz do Iguaçu:

Where is Foz do Iguaçu and why is it so special
to visit
?
Foz do Iguaçu has been continuously inhabited for more than 8,000 years although the Europeans didn’t arrive until the 16th century. What make this place so special are the 275 waterfalls that cascade hundreds of feet to the thundering and foaming river below forming one of the worlds greatest an d most awesome natural spectacles. Foz is a real must visit because if you wish to see the best Brazil has to offer and the best nature has to offer together, this is the perfect place.

What to do in Foz and surrounding areas:

National Park
The National Park is situated in the western extreme of the Paraná State, and its greatest spectacle is the Iguaçu Waterfalls. Its dimensions encompass 185,000 hectares, which makes it into the largest park in South America. It’s protected by UNESCO as is on the world natural heritage List. Its flora and fauna are rich and varied: from multicolor butterflies to large-size mammals,-like the jaguar!-, all inhabit this large and protected environment. However, as the forest is dense, it is sometimes difficult to sight all of the animals. Being the exception to the rule, a friendly little animal that does attract the visitor’s attention every day is the coati, a large raccoon type of creature. Also part of the native flora include the orquids, bromelias, centenary trees (cedar, and so forth). The area that tourists visit encompasses only 5% of the total park area.

Bird Park
The Bird Park is one of the world’s best and wasinaugurated in 1994 and is located close to the Iguaçu National Park. Located in the middle of the rainforest, with large aviaries with gardens and cascades that reproduce the natural habitat of the forest, it holds over 900 birds from 160 species not only from Brazil but also from other countries.
Endangered blue macaws from the Brazilian swamps, and many other birds, like toucans, alight on the tourist’s shoulder. Among the most exotic birds from other continents, the casuar from New Zealand and Australia, which can be up to 1,80 m (5 feet 9 inches tall), and the Australian cucaburra, which gives funny “chuckles”.
Open daily from 08h00 to 18h00.

Brazil’s Waterfalls
Situated inside the Iguaçu National Park, the waterfalls enthrall visitors from all over the world. Walking by a 1,2 km (1,20 yard) trail the visitor gets a panoramic view of the over 275 waterfalls. The main waterfall, the Devil’s Throat, is around 80-meter (250 feet) high, and forms an unforgettable piece of natural scenery. The modern and very efficient visitation complex, is absolutely integrated with the environment, and was planned with the intent to facilitate the access and ease for everyone including those with physical limitations.

Argentina’s Waterfalls
The Argentinean falls are located 30 km (18 miles) from Foz do Iguaçu, by crossing the Tancredo Neves Bridge and going past the Brazilian and Argentinean Custom Offices.  Visitors start their tour boarding a train that takes them to the Devil’s Throat trail, which is the biggest waterfall of 275 in total. After that, the tour continues on foot for 600 yards, going across the trails of the upper and lower circuit, where a detailed view of the waterfalls is enjoyed.

For foreigners: valid passport and visa of Brazil (if crossing back into Brazil).

Also available upon is the Macuco Safari Tour (a must do!), a Casino Trip to Argentina, Shopping in Paraguay, and a Mission tour of the Jesuit missions that inspired the 1986 film with Robert de Niro called ‘The Mission.”
